Labrador Training: Training Your Lab To “Down” On Command

Labrador Training Training Your Lab To “Down” On Command 300x199 Once you’ve trained your Labrador to sit” you can move on to the “down” command. This is one of the most important commands for establishing leadership as well as keeping your dog safe. It can be extremely useful for Labs that have a tendency to run into the street, display dominant behavior and get overexcited. Believe it or not, “down” is even helpful for shy or fearful dogs, as it teaches the dog to stay calm.

You’ll need the following supplies to get started:

  • Collar or harness and leash

  • Treats

  • Quiet area with grass or a soft surface (exercise mat)

Training Your Labrador To “Down” On Command

Training your Labrador to master this command can be done in just a few simple steps:

  • Place a collar or harness and a leash on your Lab.

  • Ask your dog to “sit” and give a reward.

  • Next, say “down” while guiding your Labrador into the correct position with treats and by slightly pulling down on the leash.

  • If your Lab needs extra encouragement, you can gently pull his or her front legs forward and place some pressure in the shoulder blade area. As soon as your Labrador is in the “down” position, give a treat and a lot of praise.

  • Repeat the previous steps 10 to 15 times for the next 2 training sessions or so.

  • At this point, you want your Labrador to understand that the command and action go hand in hand. Do this by saying “down” prior to moving the treat downwards. You may also want to practice giving the command without a treat, but pretending that there is one in your hand. As time passes, you won’t need to use as many treats and your Labrador will be able to execute the command on only the verbal cue.

  • Lastly, try the “down” command from various positions so that your dog doesn’t just know how to get “down” after sitting.

Additional “Down” Training Tips For Your Labrador

  • When your Labrador is responding to the “down” command about 90% of the time, it’s time to test him or her by holding training sessions in an area with more distractions (park, pet store, etc.)

  • Have your Lab stay “down” for approximately 5 seconds, and then move up to 10 seconds, 15 seconds, and so on.

  • Give your dog the command and create distractions such as playing with a ball, placing his or her meal nearby, and opening a bag of treats.

My dog! what remedy remains,

Since, teach you all I can,

I see you, after all my pains,

So much resemble man!

Labrador Training: Teaching Your Lab The “Drop It” Command

Labrador Training Teaching Your Lab The Drop It Command 300x163 In Labrador training the “drop it” command may only seem useful for playing fetch with your Lab, but in reality, it can be a life-saver. This is especially true for those with Labrador puppies, as they are fond of chewing and swallowing inedible objects. Unlike chasing your dog, “drop it” allows you to have more control and prevents them eating toxic substances/food and hazardous objects.

The things you’ll need to get started with Labrador training include;

  • A few of your Labrador’s favorite toys.

  • Treats

  • Collar and leash (to avoid having to chase your puppy)

  • Distraction-free training area

Training your Labrador to “drop it”

This training command isn’t too difficult to teach, but it does require repetition and patience. Learning the “drop-it” command can be accomplished in just a few steps:

  • Have your dog take one of his or her favorite toys and allow a few minutes of playtime. If your Lab puppy is unwilling to take a toy, give some encouragement by bouncing the ball, squeaking the toy, etc. Praise your puppy immediately after they grab the toy.

  • Hold a treat with one hand while allowing your Lab to smell it. This should get your Labrador to let go of the toy. As soon your dog releases it, give the “drop it” command, and then reward with the treat. Alternatively, you could use another favorite toy if your Lab isn’t too interested in food or treats.

  • After a few training sessions of 5 to 10 minutes each, have your Labrador wait longer before a reward is given. You can start with 5 seconds and work your way up to 10 sec., 15 sec., 20 seconds, etc. Soon, your dog will associate the command with the action.

  • Once your Labrador is confidently responding to the “drop it” command, practice it while you’re playing fetch. This will really test your dog’s obedience, as it’s easy for them to get carried away during playtime. If your Lab does not obey, stop the game immediately. You can start the game again a few minutes later when your dog has settled down. Remember to be generous with rewards until your Labrador has mastered the command.

  • Practice the command with different objects or if your Lab won’t take anything, keep an eye out for training opportunities throughout the day. It doesn’t have to be necessarily when your dog takes an “off limits” object; it can be when they’re picking up the food bowl (Labs are known for doing this when they’re hungry), taking his leash before going out for a walk, etc.

  • Finally, you want to reinforce the “drop it” command in different environments so that your Labrador knows he or she is to obey no matter what.

My Labrador retriever had a nervous breakdown. I kept throwing him a boomerang. – Nick Arnette

Labrador News: Labrador Helps Students Cope With Stress

Labrador Helps Students Cope With Stress 300x198 Image: www.chicagotribune.com

A black Labrador, Tivo, is helping students cope with stress!

The loving Labrador Retriever is on duty in Loyola’s Wellness Center. He meets with students who are homesick or need a break from the pressure of college life.

“They’ll come in, pet him, he’ll wag his tail, lick their faces, if they want their faces licked,” explains Joan Holden, associate director of the center. “If you’re a dog lover, being with a dog makes you feel better. He’ll show his tummy, wag his tail — all the things to make you feel good.”

Loyola’s search for a therapy dog started last year. They asked Tops Kennels in Grayslake to be on the lookout for a suitable candidate. Tivo was already well-trained at the time and soon went on to become a certified therapy dog.

The Lab lives with the Rev. Justin Daffron, Loyola’s associate provost for academic services.  “They live in the dorm together, the honors dorm,” Holden says. “Tivo’s a very smart dog.”

Tivo is, extremely popular. “We took him to the opening of our new student center,” Holden says, “and they were chanting his name.”

Sometimes all you need in life is a lick and a cuddle from a loving Lab to get back on track.

Labrador News: Yellow Labrador Retriever, Bella, Survives After Being Shot And Thrown In Canal!

The Montrose County sheriff is looking for whoever shot a Labrador in the head and threw her in a canal, left for dead.

A woman found the yellow Labrador retriever crawling out of the canal on Tuesday,  the sheriff’s office said.

“She was in shock. She was a real sweet dog, even in the midst of that,” sheriff’s animal control officer Charles Long told the Montrose Daily Press.

Long told the newspaper that the dog was shot with a small caliber weapon in the top of her head behind her left eye. The bullet passed through the yellow Lab cleanly, exiting below her jaw. She was taken to the veterinarian’s office and was kept overnight for observation. The Labrador survived without loss to vision or other impairments, said Montrose County spokeswoman Katie Yergensen.

Yergensen said  the dog’s owners were located on Wednesday. The owners noted that their dog, Bella, ran away on Sunday and had been missing for three days.

Sheriff Rick Dunlap said he wants to find the person who committed such a violent act on the animal.

“If anyone knows who did this, I want to prosecute. Talk about animal cruelty,” Dunlap told the paper.

The canal where the Labrador was found is at Olathe near Amber and 60.00 Roads.

Labrador Training: How To Train Your Lab To “Sit And Stay”

Labrador Training How To Train Your Lab To “Sit And Stay” 199x300 In Labrador training, “Sit and stay” is an essential command to teach your Labrador because it encourages good manners and allows you to establish leadership.

The “sit-stay” command is one of the hardest commands to teach a dog because it can take a while for them to understand that “stay” really means don’t do anything. However, it is not impossible to do and Labrador Retrievers have great capacity for learning.

Importance of teaching your Labrador the “sit and stay” command

For those of you who are wondering if teaching your Lab this command is really necessary, the answer is yes. There are three main reasons why you need to train your dog to “sit-stay”:

1. Establish leadership over your Lab

The “sit and stay” command is the most effective way to establish leadership because the owner has control. By practicing the command, you’re letting your dog know that he or she is beneath you and obeying is best.

2. Enforce good behavior in your Lab

Instilling good manners in a puppy can be difficult to do, especially with Labradors because they have an abundance of energy. One way you can enforce good behavior in your dog is by teaching and practicing the “sit-stay” command. Once your puppy is familiar with it, you may find that your dog sits and stays when he or she wants something, such as to go outside, eat, etc.

3. Practice patience with your Labrador

The main difference between the “sit” and “sit-stay” command is that the basic “sit” does not encourage patience, while the other one does. Some dogs even develop a “cheating” habit where they don’t sit all the way or they sit for just a split second. This is not a good thing because by rewarding or even just acknowledging your Labrador when this happens, you’re actually encouraging impatience.

Steps for training your Lab to “sit and stay”

Teaching your Lab puppy this command is easy to do with the following steps:

  • Place a leash and harness or collar on your dog and get some treats to use during training.

  • Ask your puppy to “sit” while holding on to his or her leash, and then give a reward.

  • Say “stay” in a neutral voice while still holding on to the leash.

  • Wait 5 to 10 seconds before giving your dog a treat and letting him or her loose.

  • Practice these steps about five times followed by a 5 minute break.

  • Slowly increase the time that your Lab is to stay or take a step back to practice the command from a further distance. These two things should be taught at separate training sessions to prevent your dog getting confused.

Lastly, remember to stay positive, provide plenty of breaks, be consistent, and practice.

“My most satisfying aspect of animal training is a very simple moment. After a show when I leave the stage door… and there is a crowd gathered, sometimes I hear someone say the following and it makes it all worthwhile. “How did they make that dog do that?” I smile because I am the only “they” and I do it with love.”

William Berloni, dog trainer, about transforming a severely abused dog from the pound into Sandy in the Broadway production of Annie.

Labrador News: The World's First Doggy Vending Machine - A Lab's Dream Machine

The Worlds First Doggy Vending Machine A Labs Dream Machine1 300x181 Dogs in south London got an unexpected treat when the world’s first vending machine for dogs pitched up on Clapham Common this week.

The dogs had to work hard for their rewards. They were challenged to pull a bone attached to a lever. A successful pull causes a tennis ball to fire from the roof of the vending machine.

The next step was to sprint after the ball and return it to the machine before picking up a treat.

Every element of the vending machine was made with a canine’s needs in mind. It is intended to encourage fun engagement and exercise.

Dogs are enticed to approach the machine, the brainchild of dog food brand Bakers, by the noises it creates such as a cat’s meow.

The Worlds First Doggy Vending Machine A Labs Dream Machine 300x207 Peter Neville, an animal expert who works with Bakers Complete, said trips to the park ‘may never be the same again’.

‘Imagine stumbling across a doggy vending machine that adds challenge and excitement to your run in the park,’ he said.

‘All it takes is a little focus, and dogs can earn a tasty Bakers Complete reward simply by engaging in a stimulating mix of mind and body.’

Labrador Training: Teaching Your Labrador The “Sit” Command

Labrador Training Teaching Your Labrador The “Sit” Command 200x300 In Labrador training, “sit” is the easiest command to teach and the most commonly used. It’s also essential for teaching and reinforcing good manners, establishing leadership and stopping bad behavior such as jumping.

There are three main ways you can go about teaching your Labrador the “sit” command:

Training your Labrador from a standing to sitting position

This technique is the most common way of teaching a dog how to “sit.” All you need to get started are some treats and a clean, quite space to work in. Once you’re ready to get started, follow these steps:

  • Position yourself so that you’re standing in front of your Lab and that you’re facing each other.

  • Hold a treat near your puppy’s nose and slowly move it above his or her head. Remember to keep about 2 inches between the dog and your hand. Otherwise, the treat may be snatched by surprise and you’ll lose focus in training.

  • While you’re luring your dog with the treat, he or she should automatically get into the sitting position. As soon as this happens, give your dog the treat and some praise.

  • Practice this technique a couple more times.

  • Once your puppy is more confident, use the “sit” command so that it is associated with the action. Repeat this process until your dog has mastered the command and frequent treats are no longer necessary for success.

Training your Labrador from a down to sitting position

This method is sort of the opposite as the first one and it’s used less often. However, it’s always good to have different options, as not all Labradors learn the same way. Plus, it’s just as effective and easy to do.

  • The first thing you need in order to teach the “sit” command using this method is to place your dog in a lying position.

  • Next, hold a treat while moving your hand above the dog’s head.

  • Your dog will follow the treat naturally and get in the sit position.

  • The treat and some praise should be quickly awarded so that your puppy knows this is desirable behavior.

  • After some practice, say the word “sit” right after the command is executed and give a reward. With some time, your dog will eventually associate the command with the action and treats will no longer be needed.

Using proper timing with your Lab

The last technique you can try in order to teach your Labrador Retriever to “sit” is all about proper timing. Basically, you need to say the command just before your puppy is going to sit and give a reward immediately after. Your dog will eventually associate sitting with the verbal cue.

Dogs travel hundreds of miles during their lifetime responding to such commands as “come” and “fetch.” – Stephen Baker.

Labrador News: Lab Mix Rescue Helps At Texas Explosion Site

Lab Mix Resuce Helps At Texas Explosion Site 188x300 Tucker, a Labrador mix rescue dog, is “paying it forward” by helping law enforcement at the Texas explosion site. The Lab was rescused as a puppy from the Yolo County Animal Shelter.

Tucker is helping to search for live people buried in the West, Texas rubble: the site of the fertilizer plant explosion that killed at least 12 people, and injured hundreds.

The explosion happened on Wednesday night.

The Lab mix, who is now four, was discovered at at five months old by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in 2009.

“It’s awesome that a five-month-old lab mix is saved from the shelter and goes through training and is able to help with the rescue efforts in Texas,” said Yolo County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Mark Persons. “It’s rewarding.”

.

Tucker and his partner Keri Grant, a firefighter-paramedic with the McKinney, Texas, Fire Department, are working the scene.

Off duty, the Lab Tucker lives with Grant, her husband, Stuart, son, Sammy, and two Weimaraners, Duke and Missy Anne.

Tucker started his formal training at 7-months-old with the nonprofit National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in Gilroy. The Foundation, based in Ojai, pairs rescued dogs with firefighters to find people buried in disaster wreckage, according to the Foundation’s website. The dogs are provided at no cost to fire departments and other first responders.

“It’s great that these animals have that opportunity,” said Persons. “I’m glad that that particular animal got the chance, and that animal made the most of his opportunity and was able to contribute to the well being of people.”

Labrador Training: Teaching Your Lab The “Leave It” Command

Labrador Training Teaching Your Lab The “Leave It” Command 200x300 Training your Labrador Retriever to “leave it” is a must. The breed’s retrieving instincts sometimes kick in and result in inappropriate chewing, eating and all kinds of things. The command can also help stop your dog eating something that’s toxic or simply inedible.

All that’s necessary to teach the “leave it” command is treats and if you’re using one, a clicker. Try to keep the sessions at 5 to 10 minutes each to avoid boredom and losing focus.

“Leave it” command steps

There are a few steps to teaching the “leave it” command:

  • Place a treat in one of your hands while your Lab is watching.

  • Maintain your hand open so that the treat is visible.

  • Say “leave it” and close your hand as soon as your dog tries to get the treat.

  • After your Lab has resisted for a reasonable time give praise and the treat. Alternatively, you can keep a different treat in your other hand to give as a reward.

  • If your puppy tries to get the treat anyway, wait until he or she is calm and retracts, and then give a different reward. If you’re using a clicker, this would also be the appropriate time to click.

  • Avoid letting your dog get the treat, as this will only defeat the purpose of teaching the command. A couple of slips won’t affect the progress in training, but as with all the other commands, consistency is the key to success. If you’re not consistent, it is going to be difficult for your Lab puppy to learn what “leave it” means and training will take longer.

  • Once your Labrador gets the hang of the command, it’s time to increase the time he or she has to wait. Do this by slowly adding a few seconds until your dog “leaves it” for minutes at a time.

Practice  with your Lab from different distances

It’s a good idea to practice the command with your Labrador puppy at different distances so that he or she obeys no matter how far or how close you are. Begin by placing a treat about 2 ft. away from your dog and say “leave it.” Keep your hand near the treat in case your puppy tries to get it. Give a reward (not the same treat you’re using for practice) and some praise to reinforce desirable behavior. Move the treat around (closer, to the side, farther away, etc.) a couple of times throughout the session.

Next, toss a treat near your dog, take about 2 steps back and say “leave it.” Keep a close eye on your puppy, as you might have to cover the treat with your foot if he or she tries to get it. Slowly increase the distance between you and the treat until your Lab obeys from across the room or further if you’d like.

Vary the objects for your Lab

Using treats to teach “leave it” is only required in the beginning. When your Lab obeys the command confidently, you can start substituting the treats with other objects such as toys, food, sticks, etc. This will ensure that your Labrador understands that the “leave it” command applies to everything.

Labrador News: Labrador Retriever Is American Kennel Club's 2013 National Agility Champion

A black Labrador retriever named Henry is the American Kennel Club’s 2013 national champion agility dog. The Lab and his owner,Dennis Butler,  of Norman and Hubert Bereman of Oklahoma City.

The 8-year-old Labrador won the title last month at the American Kennel Club’s National Agility Championships in Tulsa.

The Labrador won the title last month at the American Kennel Club’s National Agility Championships in Tulsa. Henry, an eight year old Lab, competed against all breeds in five rounds in the 20-inch preferred class. This class requires dogs to navigate obstacle courses and jump 20-inch hurdles. The fewer errors the better. The courses include various jumps, tunnels, weave poles, teeters and other obstacles. It is designed to test the dog’s agility, speed, and discipline.

Henry is trained by Butler and his wife, Kris, owners of the American Dog Obedience Center in Norman.

“Henry is our first agility dog,” said Dennis Butler. He has been working with dogs for 30 years but only started agility training with Henry five years ago. “He is an athletic and high-drive animal, but he maintains that lovable Labrador personality.”

Butler has owned Henry since he was a pup. He was born from field trial royalty. His sire, FC AFC Fordland’s Bored Out Ford, was a 2011 inductee into the Bird Dog Foundation’s Retriever Field Trial Hall of Fame.

Henry originally competed in field trials, but on a whim the Butlers decided to see how Henry would perform on an agility course.

Labrador News: Hetty, The First Dually-Trained Assitance Dog, Honored

Hetty The First Dually Trained Assitance Dog Honored 220x300 Tony Brown-Griffin’s Labrador assistance dog, Hetty, makes life possible and enjoyable for her. She suffers from life-threatening seizures and is also blind. This Labrador is the first dog trained as both a seizure detection dog and a guide dog. A service dog trained in two disciplines is no small accomplishment and a first in the field.

Tony was clinically diagnosed with epilepsy in 1995. She suffered up to 12 major attacks and as many as 40 minor attacks a week. She was constantly exhausted and in life-threatening situations. “Once I put my head through a glass shower screen,” she said. “Incredibly I wasn’t injured.” Her injuries included broken ribs, a fractured wrist and multiple bruises. She spent one summer in intensive care due to back-to-back seizure.  In her words: “I felt as though my life had stopped at 24”.

Tony and her husband Dan had a border collie named Rupert who would naturally alert Tony to a coming seizure moments before it happened, but the alerts weren’t regular enough. But this inspired Tony and her husband to see if Rupert could be trained. Once Rupert was trained Tony’s life changed dramatically for the better.

As if life was not bad enough, six years ago Tony became blind. When her seizure dog, Ajay, retired she knew she needed a dog that could assist with both disabilities.

Tony worked with Hetty, she knew instantly that this was the dog for her. We just clicked,” she said.

Hetty is always by Tony’s side and allows her to do the things she loves. “I go horse riding again thanks to her, and I take the girls swimming, too,” said Tony. “If Hetty starts wailing I’ll go over to be checked and then if I’m Ok, I can carry on.” With Hetty’s help, her daughters no longer have to witness her seizures. This is a great relief for Tony. “I’ve seen what it’s like for an adult to have a seizure and it’s not nice, so for them it would be terrifying.”

This Labrador continues to impress Tony and everyone she meets. Hetty’s impressive skills are being honored by the British Animal Honours 2013. “Hetty’s my best friend and savior in the form of a black ball of fluff,” says Tony. “It’s lovely she’s being recognized, she’s a superdog.”

Labrador Breeders: How To Select A Good One

Finding a reputable Labrador Retriever breeder can be challenging, but it’s worth it because you’re assured a happy and healthy Labrador puppy.

Five important tips to follow before choosing a breeder include:

Labrador Breeders How To Select A Good One 300x198 Schedule an appointment with the Lab breeder

Responsible Labrador breeders are always willing to engage in an interview with people who are interested in acquiring a Lab puppy. Inexperienced or irresponsible dog breeders on the other hand, typically focus on selling as many puppies as they can without worrying whether they’re going to a good home or not. During the appointment, you and the breeder will be able to exchange questions and clear any doubts that you may have.

Ask questions about Labradors

Labrador breeders with a good reputation are open to any questions, as they have nothing to hide. Some important questions to ask during your visit include;

  • Are you familiar with the Lab puppies’ ancestry?

  • Were the parents screened for genetic health conditions such as hip dysplasia before being bred?

  • Are there any health problems associated with the specific line of Labradors?

  • Have there been any recent outbreaks of Parvovirus or other contagious diseases in the facility?

  • Have puppies been born with any undesirable characteristics in the past?

Get a tour of the Labrador breeding facility

While you’re at the breeding facility, you should also ask for a tour of the place. Scan the environment for cleanliness and ensure that the dogs are all treated humanely. After all, you don’t want to support Lab puppy mills or irresponsible breeders. You may also want to ask things like; how much exercise do the dogs get, what type of food are they fed, and do the puppies receive any sort of training?

Labrador Breeders How To Select A Good One Yellow Lab Puppies 300x150 Inquire about veterinary care

The ideal age to start housing Lab puppies is around 8 weeks old. By this time, they can get their first vaccination and deworming, but some breeders wait until 8 or 9 weeks of age to do this. It’s important to ask the breeder what the puppies have already received as far as veterinary care goes so that you know what to expect next. You can also ask to see medical records to confirm that the parents and puppies are up to date on vaccines, deworming, etc.

Ask about Labrador paper work

Each breeder has their own policies in regards to selling a Labrador puppy, which is why you should ask to see a contract before making a decision. Some breeders have a no return policy, while others make a lifetime commitment to the puppies that they breed. Certain breeders will also cover medical costs in the event that the puppy becomes ill during the first 2 weeks (or whatever the time frame) of being in his or her new home.

If the Labrador puppies are not yet registered with the AKC, the breeder must also provide you with the proper information so that you can register your dog at a later time. Without the AKC certification, you have no proof that your dog is in fact a purebred Labrador Retriever.

Labrador News: Yellow Labrador Rose Comforts Hospice Patients

By JEFF JARDINE The Modesto Bee

HUGHSON, Calif.

Yellow Labrador Rose Comforts Hospice Patients 225x300 Nearly every day, Dr. Gary Pickell makes his rounds at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House.

So does his good friend Rosie.

They visit the terminally ill patients, about half of whom come to the 16-room facility to ease into eternity. Others are there to have their pain and other problems controlled and stabilized so that they can go home to spend their final days. And others check in to give their caregiver kinfolk a break.

The house serves about 700 patients each year.

Rosie is there for all of them. She’s an 8-year-old golden Labrador retriever and a full-time staff member.

“She works for food,” Pickell said.

With her photo ID “volunteer” badge dangling from her collar, Rosie brings friendship and joy to a place that, despite its cleanliness, classy decor and cheerful staff, cannot help but be cloaked in sadness. She makes friends easily and eases their pain in a way some medications cannot.

“She’s a pet therapist,” Pickell said. “She provides emotional support. Elderly people can be forgetful. They don’t remember me, but they’ll remember her. She’ll introduce herself and then go lie down. And while I’m doing my paperwork, she’ll go back and visit.”

Rosie comes from a line of downsized, calm goldens, a gift from a breeder in Escalon, Calif.

“For the first year, I had Rosie on a leash attached to my belt,” he said. “After that, she knew what she had to do.”

Which is to be there to be petted, and to be a distraction for family members there waiting for the inevitable.

“To take the edge off the emotional strain,” he said. “And with the patients, she helps them feel more in touch with nature. A few don’t like dogs, but very few.”

Helen Amarant of Atwater, Calif., and Rosie became fast friends when Helen’s husband, Joe, became a patient.

“I think Rosie liked me instantly,” Helen said. “We’ve always had German shepherds. I never met a dog I didn’t love.”

After her husband passes, she said, “I will still come back and feed her.”

Roxanne Poole, there last week to visit her mom, Shirley Turner, is another Rosie fan.

“She’s sweet,” Roxanne said. “She follows us around.”

Roxanne brings bacon-strip doggie snacks, making her one of Rosie’s favorites, as well.

“My dog’s going to be jealous when I get home, smelling you on me,” she said, talking to Rosie.

Oleta Woodside is a patient at the Hospice House. Oleta is 80 and quick to tell you she once reigned as Modesto, Calif.’s very first Miss Industry “when I was 21 or 22,” which would have been in the early 1950s.

“I represented Modesto to industry,” she said, her eyes suggesting she had drifted back to another era.

She also loves to talk about her 30 years as the Doll Doctor, designing and creating costumes and accessories for antique dolls in her Modesto shop.

“I did over 7,000 restorations,” she said. “For nine years, my sister worked with me, and we both brought our dogs to work every day.”

But now, in the Hospice House, she misses her cat, Marmalade, and dog, Molly, the latter a Maltese breed.

“I would love to bring them in here,” she said. “Molly was a rescue dog.”

Which makes Rosie’s visits so meaningful. She dropped in unannounced on Oleta earlier that morning.

“She got to share a little bit of my breakfast,” Oleta said. “But not too much. We don’t want her getting overweight. She’s a charming, delightful dog. I enjoy her friendship very much.”

A friend, indeed, and just what the doctor ordered.

Here’s a video of another Labrador therapy dog, Winnie. It’s delightful!
